예수님 – 첫번째로 거듭나신 분
Jesus – The First To Be Born Again
“또 충성된 증인으로 죽은 자들 가운데에서 먼저 나시고 땅의 임금들의 머리가 되신 예수 그리스도로 말미암아…”(계 1:5)
아주 어린 그리스도인이었을 때, 저는 사람들에게 말씀을 전하며 그리스도의 구원을 받고 거듭날 것을 권면했습니다. 몇몇 사람들은 저에게 다음과 같이 질문했습니다. “예수님도 거듭나지 않으셨는데 왜 내가 거듭나야 합니까?”
그 당시 저는 말씀에 대한 이해가 부족하여 예수님은 하나님의 아들이시기 때문에 거듭나실 필요가 없다고 대답했습니다. 하지만 성경을 공부하면서, 저는 예수님은 거듭나야 했고, 실제로 거듭나셨다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 그렇다면 지금 당신이 즉각적으로 떠올릴 질문은 이것일 것입니다. “예수님은 언제 거듭나셨습니까?”
오늘의 본문 구절에 따르면 예수님은 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나신 그날 다시 태어나셨습니다. 그렇다면 왜 예수님은 거듭나야 하셨을까요? 대답은 간단합니다. 그분은 십자가에서 우리를 위해 죄가 되셨기 때문에 거듭나야 하셨습니다. 성경은 말합니다. “하나님이 죄를 알지도 못하신 이를 우리를 대신하여 죄로 삼으신 것은 우리로 하여금 그 안에서 하나님의 의가 되게 하려 하심이라.”(고후 5:21)
예수님은 우리의 완전한 대속물로서 우리의 본성을 취하셨습니다. 그분은 우리를 대신하여 십자가에서 ‘우리’가 되셨습니다. 하나님은 십자가에 달리신 예수님을 보셨을 때, 하나님은 당신을 보셨습니다. 하나님은 저를 보셨고, 모든 인간, 즉 지금까지 태어났고 앞으로 태어날 남녀노소 모두를 보셨습니다. 예수님은 우리의 죄를 지셨고, 우리의 죄를 진 자로서 죽고 장사되었습니다.
하지만 여기서 끝이 아님에 하나님께 감사드립니다! 예수님이 우리 죄에 대한 모든 값을 지불하셨을 때, 성경은 예수님이 우리를 의롭다 하시기 위해 아버지의 영광으로 말미암아 죽은 자 가운데서 일으켜 지셨다고 말합니다. “그러므로 우리가 그의 죽으심과 합하여 세례를 받음으로 그와 함께 장사되었나니 이는 아버지의 영광으로 말미암아 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리심과 같이 우리로 또한 새 생명 가운데서 행하게 하려 함이라.”(롬 6:4)
우리를 위해 예수님이 하신 일이 우리가 의로워지기에 합당하다는 것을 증명하시기 위해 그분은 죽은 자 가운데서 새 생명, 즉 부활 생명으로 일으켜져야 하셨습니다. 예수님은 죽음으로부터 일으켜진 첫번째 거듭난 분이셨습니다. 이는 곧 영적인 죽음에서 나와 거듭난 첫 번째라는 뜻입니다. 그분이 새로운 피조물의 머리가 되셨습니다. 하나님께 영광 드립니다!
기도
의로우신 아버지, 나를 위한 예수님의 대속적인 죽음과 희생에 감사드립니다. 그로 인해 나는 의롭게 되었습니다. 예수님의 영광스러운 부활을 통해 나는 신성한 생명으로 살아가며, 하늘의 영역에서 그분과 함께 다스리고 살아갑니다. 예수 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.

JESUS—THE FIRST TO BE BORN AGAIN
“And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth…”(Revelation 1:5).
When I was a much younger Christian, as I went about preaching to people, asking them to receive Christ’s salvation and be born again, some of them confronted me with the question: “Why should I be born again, when even Jesus wasn’t born again?”
From my limited understanding at the time, I answered that Jesus didn’t have to be born again, because He was the Son of God. But as I studied the Bible, I found out Jesus had to be born again, and He was indeed born again! The question that this may immediately bring to your mind would be: when was He born again?
According to our opening scripture, Jesus was born again the day He was raised from the dead. So why did Jesus have to be born again? The answer is simple: He needed to be born again because He was made sin for us on the Cross. The Bible records that God “hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Jesus took on our nature as our perfect substitute. He took our place and became ‘us’ on the cross. When God looked at Jesus on that cross, He saw you; He saw me; He saw every man, woman, boy and girl ever born, and that’ll ever be born into this world. Our sins were laid on Him and He died in that state—our sin bearer—and was buried for us.
But thank God it didn’t end there! When He had paid the full penalty for our sins, the Bible says He was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father for our justification: “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).
He needed to be raised from the dead into a new life, the resurrection life, to prove that what He did for us was adequate for our justification. He’s called “the first begotten of the dead”; that means the first to come out of spiritual death and be born again. He heads up the new creation. Glory to God!
PRAYER
Righteous Father, I thank you for the vicarious death and sacrifice of Jesus in my behalf by which I’ve been made righteous. Now, through His glorious resurrection, I live the divine life, reigning and ruling with Him from the heavenly realms, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
