Cut Off The Supply
“그러므로 땅에 있는 지체를 죽이라 곧 음란과 부정과 사욕과 악한 정욕과 탐심이니 탐심은 우상 숭배니라”(골 3:5)
오늘의 본문 구절에서 사도 바울을 통해 성령께서 말씀하신 내용은 상당히 흥미롭습니다. 먼저 이 말씀은 당신이 세상에 속한 존재가 아니라는 것을 보여줍니다. 당신의 존재 가운데 유일하게 세상에 속한 부분 혹은 “지체”는 당신의 육신입니다. 육신은 이 땅에서 기능할 수 있게 하는 수단입니다. 그러나 당신은 본질적으로 영적인 존재입니다. 그러므로 당신은 육신을 다스릴 수 있습니다.
본문 구절에 나오는 “죽이다”라는 단어에 주목하십시오. 이 단어는 헬라어로 “네크루(nekroo)”이며, 영어 단어 “괴사(necrosis)”가 이 단어에서 유래되었습니다. 괴사는 특정 조직으로 들어가는 혈류가 중단되면서 신체 조직이 죽는 것을 뜻합니다. 예를 들어, 팔다리에 대한 혈액 공급에 문제가 생기면 팔다리의 조직은 죽게 됩니다. 그렇다면 이 구절을 통해 성령께서 말씀하고 계시는 것은 무엇입니까?
당신이 공급을 “차단해야 한다”는 뜻입니다. 여기서 말하는 공급은 성적인 죄악이나 불순함, 음욕, 탐욕과 같은 육신 안에 숨어 있는 악하고 불건전한 욕망을 만족시키는 것입니다. 그러한 공급을 중단함으로써 악한 욕망들을 죽게 만들고 복종시키십시오. 당신의 삶을 조종하려고 하는 것들을 “죽이고” 그 힘을 빼앗으십시오. 그렇게 하는 것은 당신의 책임입니다.
당신이 버리기 원하는 잘못된 습관이나, 성경에서 그리스도인으로서 하지 말라고 하는 지침들 가운데 당신의 삶에서 완전히 제거하고 싶은 것들이 있다면, 말씀이 말하는 대로 그저 행하십시오. 당신의 사고 체계로부터 공급을 차단하십시오. 당신의 생각들로 그것들을 먹이지 마십시오! 영상이나 책, 웹사이트 혹은 TV 프로그램들이 당신에게 영향을 미치는 것을 더 이상 허용하지 마십시오.
당신의 육신을 만족시키는 일과 잘못된 욕망을 삶에 두는 것을 멈추십시오. 그러면 당신의 행동이 바뀌는 것을 발견하게 될 것입니다. 기독교는 반드시 행동으로 실천되어야 합니다. 성경은 빌립보서 4:8을 통해 우리의 생각을 무엇으로 채워야 하는지 말하고 있습니다. “끝으로 형제들아 무엇에든지 참되며 무엇에든지 경건하며 무엇에든지 옳으며 무엇에든지 정결하며 무엇에든지 사랑 받을 만하며 무엇에든지 칭찬 받을 만하며 무슨 덕이 있든지 무슨 기림이 있든지 이것들을 생각하라.” 그러므로 의식적으로 불건전한 생각을 버리고, 당신의 마음을 그리스도와 그분의 말씀, 사랑, 선하심, 자비와 은혜에 두십시오. 할렐루야!

“CUT OFF THE SUPPLY”
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry (Colossians 3:5).
The Spirit’s construction through the Apostle Paul of the verse above is rather interesting. First, it shows that you’re not an earthly being. The only “members” or part of your personality that’s earthly is your physical body; that’s your instrument for functioning in the earth. You’re essentially a spirit being. Therefore, you can control your body.
Observe the word, “Mortify” in our opening verse; it’s the Greek, “nekroō,” where the English derived “necrosis.” Necrosis is the death of body tissue resulting from an interruption of blood flow to that tissue. For example, if there’s a problem with thesupply of blood to the limb, that tissue dies. What then is the Spirit telling us here?
It means you’re to “cut off” the supply, the very thing that feeds the evil and unwholesome desires lurking in your members—sexual vices, impurity, sensual appetites, greed, covetousness, etc.! Mortify or subject them to death by the interruption of its supply; “deaden” and deprive them of their power to control your life. It’s your responsibility to do this.
If there’re inappropriate habits you’ll like to stop, or some of the instructions the Scriptures expressly condemn for a Christian that you’ll like to completely obliterate from your life, simply do what the Bible says: cut the supply from your thought system; don’t feed them with your thoughts! It might be a video, a book, a website, or some TV programs; refuse to allow them influence you any further.
If you stop feeding your flesh, the wrong desires won’t have a place in your life; you’d find that your behaviour will change. Christianity must be practised. The Bible does tell us what to feed our minds with in Philippians 4:8. It says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” So, consciously take your mind off unwholesome thoughts and set your affection on Christ, His Word, His love, His goodness, mercies and grace. Hallelujah!
