He Sees Your Heart

“각 사람의 마음을 살피고, 심장을 감찰하며, 각 사람의 행실과 행동에 따라 보상하는 이는 바로 나 주다.”(렘17:10, 새번역)

성경에는 주님께서 참으로 사람의 마음을 시험하심을 이해하는 데 도움이 되는 놀라운 사례들이 있습니다. 하나님이 어떻게 이새의 집에서 다윗을 선택하셨고, 그의 형제인 엘리압을 확실하게 반대하셨는지 다윗의 이야기를 떠올려 보십시오. 겉모습으로만 봤을 때 엘리압은 모두가 자신의 지도자에게 바라는 모든 모습을 가지고 있었습니다. 엘리압이 나타났을 때, 선지자 사무엘은 그를 보고 말했습니다. “…여호와의 기름 부으실 자가 과연 주님 앞에 있도다 하였더니”(삼상16:6).

그러나 성경은 “여호와께서 사무엘에게 이르시되 그의 용모와 키를 보지 말라 내가 이미 그를 버렸노라 … 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라 하시더라”(삼상16:7)고 말합니다.

주님께서 선택하신 단어에 주목하십시오. 주님은 “엘리압에게 기름을 붓지 마라. 내가 그를 택하지 아니하였노라”고 하지 않으셨습니다. 만일 주님이 그렇게 말씀하셨다면 이는 애초부터 엘리압은 고려대상이 아니었다는 뜻이었을 것입니다. 그러나 주님은 “내가 그를 버렸다”고 말씀하셨습니다. 그것은 하나님께서 엘리압을 고려하셨으나 “아니다!”라고 말씀하셨다는 뜻입니다.

과연 엘리압은 하나님께서 그를 언젠가 이스라엘을 다스릴 왕으로 고려하셨음을 알았을까요? 그는 몰랐습니다! 그러나 하나님은 엘리압도 고려하셨고 그가 부족함을 보셨습니다. 아브라함의 이야기는 이와 비슷한 예시이지만, 이번에는 긍정적인 예시입니다. 아브라함은 시험을 통과했기 때문입니다. 아브라함과 사라는 오랜 기간 동안 아이를 원한 끝에 결국 노년에 아들을 갖게 되었습니다.

그러나 어느 날 성경은 하나님이 아브라함을 시험하셨다고 말합니다. 하나님은 아브라함에게 그의 외아들 이삭을 제물로 바치라고 말씀하셨습니다(창22:2). 하나님은 아브라함에게 “지금 너를 시험하고 싶다”고 예고하지 않으셨습니다. 하지만 아브라함은 하나님께서 이삭을 죽은 자 가운데서도 살리실 수 있다는 믿음을 보였고, 상징적으로 그것이 그대로 이루어졌습니다(히 11:17-19). 아브라함은 주님을 전적으로 신뢰하고 순종했습니다.

당신은 다음 단계의 임무나 승진을 위해 언제 시험을 받는지 또는 그 대상으로 고려되고 있는지 알 수 없습니다. 중요한 것은 당신이 부족한 상태로 발견되면 안 된다는 것입니다. 이것이 당신이 믿음과 희망과 사랑 안에서 살아야 하는 이유입니다. 겸손 하십시오. 항상 최선을 다하십시오. 위선으로 행하지 말고 정직하고 강직하게 행하십시오. 참으로 하나님은 당신의 마음을 보십니다.

고백

나는 주님을 열렬히 사랑하고 진정으로 그분을 섬기는 마음을 가지고 있습니다. 오 주님, 나의 소원은 항상 주님을 기쁘게 하는 것입니다. 나는 오늘 주님의 말씀과 일치하여 모든 일에 관한 당신의 완전한 뜻을 알고 그 안에서 행하기를 원합니다. 이렇게 행할 때 나의 삶이 주님께 영광을 드릴 것입니다. 예수 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.

He Sees Your Heart

“But I, GOD, search the heart and examine the mind. I get to the heart of the human. I get to the root of things. I treat them as they really are, not as they pretend to be”(Jeremiah 17:10 MSG).

There’re remarkable instances in Scripture that help us understand that the Lord indeed tests men’s hearts. Consider the story of David, how God chose him from the house of Jesse, and the very significant rejection of his brother, Eliab. Eliab, from the outward appearance, was everything you would want in a leader; the moment he showed up, and Samuel the Prophet saw him, he said, “…Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him” (1 Samuel 16:6).

However, the Bible says, “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him…for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

Notice the Lord’s choice of words; He didn’t say, “Don’t anoint Eliab, for I have not chosen him.” If He had said that, it would mean Eliab wasn’t even considered in the first place. But the Lord said, “I have refused him.” It means that God considered him, and said, “No!”

Did Eliab ever know that he was considered by God to someday be king over Israel? No! But God considered him and found him wanting. The story of Abraham is another case in point, this time, a positive one, because Abraham passed the test. After years of wanting a child, he and Sarah eventually had a son at their old age.

But one day, the Bible says God tested Abraham. He asked him to offer his only son, Isaac, as a sacrifice (Genesis 22:2). God didn’t announce to Abraham, “Hey I want to test you now,” no! But Abraham demonstrated his faith that God could raise Isaac from the dead, and symbolically, that’s exactly what happened (Hebrews 11:17-19). He trusted completely in the Lord and obeyed.

You may never know when you’re being tested or considered for the next level of your assignment and promotion. The important thing is for you not to be found wanting. It’s the reason you must walk in faith, hope and love. Be humble, and always be at your best, not in hypocrisy, but in integrity of heart and in uprightness, for God indeed sees your heart.

CONFESSION

I have a heart that loves the Lord passionately, and serves Him truly. My desire, O, Lord, is to please you always. I’m aligned with your Word today, to know and walk in your perfect will concerning all things, such that my life will bring you glory, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
