“그가 어떤 사람은 사도로, 어떤 사람은 선지자로, 어떤 사람은 복음 전하는 자로, 어떤 사람은 목사와 교사로 삼으셨으니 이는 성도를 온전하게 하여 봉사의 일을 하게 하며 그리스도의 몸을 세우려 하심이라”(엡 4:11-12)
사도 바울은 그리스도의 몸 안에 있는 오중 사역 은사의 분명한 목적에 대해 강조합니다. 이 은사들은 성도를 온전하게 하고, 봉사의 일을 하게 하며, 그리스도의 몸을 세우기 위한 것입니다.
일부 번역본들은 구두점이 없으므로 이 구절이 처음부터 마지막까지 하나의 통일된 목적을 가지고 있다고 잘못 생각합니다. 그러나 문맥을 분석하고 다른 구절들과 비교해 보면, 바울이 설명한 분명한 목적들이 있음을 발견할 수 있습니다.
또 다른 번역본들은 “성도를 온전케 하고, 그러면 성도들이 사역의 일을 할 수 있게 되고, 그것은 곧 그리스도의 몸을 세우는 일이다” 라고 잘못 해석합니다. 그러나 이는 오해입니다. 이 사역 은사들은 세 개의 뚜렷한 목적을 가지고 있으며, 첫 번째는 성도들을 온전하게 하거나 구비시키는 일입니다.
둘째로, 사역의 일 자체를 위한 것입니다. 셋째로, 그리스도의 몸을 세우기 위해서입니다. 그러므로 성도들이 그리스도의 몸을 세우게 될 것이라고 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 11절에 언급된 오중 사역자들이 그리스도의 몸을 세우는 일을 담당합니다.
물론 몸의 각 지체가 자신의 기능을 다할 때 전체 몸이 세워집니다. 에베소서 4:16은 말합니다. “그에게서 온 몸이 각 마디를 통하여 도움을 받음으로 연결되고 결합하여 각 지체의 분량대로 역사하여 그 몸을 자라게 하며 사랑 안에서 스스로 세우느니라”
또한 골로새서 2:19은 말합니다. “머리를 붙들지 아니하는지라 온몸이 머리로 말미암아 마디와 힘줄로 공급함을 받고 연합하여 하나님이 자라게 하시므로 자라느니라” 그러나 바울은 에베소서 4장에서 성도를 온전케 하는 일, 사역의 일, 교회를 세우는 일의 은사에 각각 분명한 목적을 두고 있음을 말합니다.

사랑하는 아버지, 나는 사역 은사들을 통해 그리스도의 몸 안에서 구비되고, 세워지고, 강건해졌습니다. 나는 어둠이나 약함 가운데 행하지 않고 침체 속에 살지 않습니다. 나는 항상 열매 맺고, 생산적이고, 항상 모든 선한 일에 풍성하기 때문입니다. 아멘.

DISTINCT PURPOSES OF THE FIVE-FOLD MINISTRY GIFTS
“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:” (Ephesians 4:11-12).
The apostle Paul highlights the clear purpose of the five-fold ministry gifts in the Body of Christ. They’re for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, and for the edifying of the body of Christ.”
Some Bible translations wrongly assume that the passage presents a single unified purpose, extending from the first line to the last, due to the lack of punctuation in the manuscripts. However, a closer examination, supported by contextual analysis and comparison with other scriptures reveals distinct purposes outlined by Paul.
Some other Bible translations wrongly phrased the statement as, “for the perfecting of the saints, so that the saints can do the work of the ministry, which is the edifying of the Body of Christ.” But that’s a misconception. Three distinct purposes for the ministry gifts are, first, to perfect or equip the saints.
Secondly, they’re for the work of the ministry itself. Thirdly, they are for the edification of the Body of Christ. So, it’s not stating that the saints themselves will edify the Body of Christ, but rather, the five-fold offices listed in verse 11 are responsible for building up the Body of Christ.
Of course, when every part of the Body functions as it should, the entire Body is edified. Ephesians 4:16 (NIV) tells us, “From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”
Also, Colossians 2:19 says, “And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.” However, in Ephesians 4, Paul directs attention to the distinct purposes assigned to ministry gifts for equipping the saints, the work of the ministry, and building up the Church.
PRAYER
Dear Father, I’m equipped, edified, and built up in the Body of Christ through the ministry gifts. I don’t walk in darkness, weakness, or live in stagnation, for I’m always fruitful, productive, and always abounding in every good work. Amen.
