“The Mighty” And The “gods”

“예수께서 이르시되 너희 율법에 기록된 바 내가 너희를 신이라 하였노라 하지 아니하였느냐”(요 10:34)

주 예수님께서 오늘의 본문 구절을 인용하신 시편 82편의 첫 일곱 구절을 읽어보면, 다음과 같은 놀라운 말씀을 발견하게 됩니다. “하나님은 신들의 모임 가운데에 서시며 … 가난한 자와 고아를 위하여 판단하며 곤란한 자와 빈궁한 자에게 공의를 베풀지며 가난한 자와 궁핍한 자를 구원하여 악인들의 손에서 건질지니라 하시는도다 그들은 알지도 못하고 깨닫지도 못하여 흑암 중에 왕래하니 땅의 모든 터가 흔들리도다 내가 말하기를 너희는 신들이며 다 지존자의 아들들이라 하였으나…”

하나님께서 그분의 백성들을 “강한 자(the Mighty)”라고 부르신 것에 주목하십시오. 또한 “너희는 신들이며”라고 말씀하십니다. 그리고 더 나아가 우리의 책임에 대해 설명합니다. 우리는 “가난한 자와 고아를 위하여 판단하며 곤란한 자와 빈궁한 자에게 공의를…” 베풀어야 합니다. 가난한 사람들의 어려움을 외면하지 마십시오. 그들을 악한 사람들의 손에서 구출해야 할 사람은 바로 당신입니다. 당신은 왜 하나님께서 오바댜 1:21에서 우리를 구원자로 부르셨는지 이해할 수 있을 것입니다.

시편 82:4에서 말하는 내용은 고통스럽습니다. “그들은 알지도 못하고 깨닫지도 못하여 흑암 중에 왕래하니…” 다시 말해, “신들”이 자신들이 어떤 자인지에 대해 무지하기 때문에 이 땅은 혼란스러운 상황 속에 있는 것입니다. “… 땅의 모든 터가 흔들리도다…”

제가 만났던 한 청년이 생각납니다. 그는 하나님을 믿지 않았습니다. 제가 그에게 왜 하나님을 믿지 않는지 물었더니, 그는 우리 주변에 가난하고 고통받는 사람들이 너무 많기 때문이라고 답변했습니다. 그는 “만일 하나님이 계시다면 왜 그분께서는 너무나 많은 사람들이 가난, 고통, 비참한 상황에 빠져 있도록 허락하시는 것입니까? 그것은 옳지 않습니다”라고 말했습니다.

그래서 저는 그에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “당신 말이 맞습니다. 그것은 옳지 않은 일입니다. 그러나 하나님의 잘못은 아닙니다. 하나님께서 궁핍한 사람들을 구출하고 도우라고 보내신 이들이 그 일을 하지 않은 것입니다. 그리고 그 보냄 받은 사람들에는 당신도 포함됩니다.” 그 후 제가 그 청년에게 복음을 전했고, 그는 영광스럽게 구원받았습니다.

당신은 악한 자들의 손에서 궁핍한 사람들을 구출하는 사람입니다. 당신은 궁핍한 사람들의 구원자입니다. 당신이 누구인지 알고, 돕는 자와 구원하는 자로써 자신의 위치에 서십시오. 당신은 자신의 세상에 영향을 끼치고 변화를 일으키도록 가장 높으신 분께 능력을 받은 사람입니다.

고백

나는 다른 사람들의 삶에 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 내 주변 세상에 변화를 일으키도록 성령으로 말미암아 능력을 받았습니다. 나는 가난하고 궁핍한 사람들을 보호하고, 고통받는 사람들에게 공의를 베풀고, 그들을 악한 자들의 손에서 구출하도록 지혜와 용기 가운데 행합니다. 예수 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.

THE “MIGHTY” AND THE “GODS”

“Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?” (John 10:34).

When you read the first seven verses of Psalm 82 from where the Lord Jesus quoted the verse above, you’d observe something remarkable. It says, “God standeth in the congregation of the mighty…. Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked. They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course. I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High….”

Notice that God calls His people, “the mighty”; and also He says, “Ye are gods.” But then the passage goes further to outline our responsibilities: we’re to “Defend the poor and fatherless….” We’re to “…do justice to the afflicted and needy.” Don’t turn away from the plight of the needy; you’re the one to deliver them out of the hand of the wicked. You can understand why He calls us saviours in Obadiah 1:21.

The fourth verse of that Psalm is painful; it says, “They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness….” In other words, because these “mighty,” these “gods,” are ignorant of who they are, the earth is in a chaotic condition: “…All the foundations of the earth are out of course.”

It reminds me of a certain young man I met who said He didn’t believe in God. When I asked him why, he said because there were too many poor and suffering people around us. “If there’s a God,” he asked, “why would He allow so many to be wallowing in poverty, pain and misery? It’s not right.”

Then I said to him, “You’re correct; it’s not right. But it’s not God’s fault. Those whom He has sent to save and help the needy aren’t doing it and that includes you.” Thereafter, I preached the Gospel to him and he was gloriously saved.

You’re the one to rid the poor out of the hands of the wicked. You’re the saviour of the needy. Get to know who you are and take your place as the helper and the deliverer, the one who’s been endued with power from on high to impact and change your world. Hallelujah!

CONFESSION

I’m empowered by the Holy Spirit to make a positive impact in the lives of others and make a difference in the world around me. I walk in the wisdom and courage to defend the poor and needy, to do justice to the afflicted, and to rid them of the hand of the wicked, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
