He Died For The Ungodly
“너희가 전에는 악한 행실로 인하여 멀리 떠나 너희의 생각으로 원수가 되었으나”(골 1:21, 한글킹제임스)
오늘의 본문 구절은 경건하지 않은 자들이 악한 행실로 인해 하나님으로부터 떠나고 그들의 생각으로 원수가 되었다고 말합니다. 다른 말로 하면, 그들은 자신들의 악한 행실로 인하여 그들의 생각 가운데서 하나님의 원수가 된 것입니다. 그러나 분명한 사실은, 하나님께서 그들을 원수라고 말씀하지 않으셨다는 것입니다. 오히려 그분은 화목하게 하시는 분입니다. 성경은 말합니다. “곧 하나님께서 그리스도 안에 계시사 세상을 자기와 화목하게 하시며 그들의 죄를 그들에게 돌리지 아니하시고…”(고후 5:19)
이는 에덴동산에서 하나님과 아담 사이에 일어났던 일과 비슷합니다. 아담은 하나님께 범죄하고 숨어버렸습니다(창 3:8). 그러나 하나님은 그를 찾으러 오셨습니다. 그분은 “아담아, 네가 어디 있느냐?”고 물으셨습니다. 얼마나 자애로우십니까! 우리가 죄인일 때도 우리는 하나님께 원수가 아니었습니다. 그분은 우리를 그분께 데려오는 방법을 생각하고 계셨습니다. 그분은 계획을 세우고 계셨습니다.
골로새서 1:22은 우리에게 그리스도의 구원 사역의 목적과 결과를 알려줍니다. “… 너희를 거룩하고 흠 없고 책망할 것이 없는 자로 그 앞에 세우고자 하셨으니.” 그분은 그 일을 행하시기 전에 자신이 어떤 일을 할지 미리 아셨습니다. 로마서 5:6은 말합니다. “우리가 아직 연약할 때에 기약대로 그리스도께서 경건하지 않은 자를 위하여 죽으셨도다.” 정말 감동적입니다.
그분은 우리를 위해 죽으시기 전에 우리가 경건해지기를 기다리지 않으셨습니다. 그분은 화목하게 하는 일을 시작하셨습니다. “곧 우리가 원수 되었을 때에 그의 아들의 죽으심으로 말미암아 하나님과 화목하게 되었은즉 화목하게 된 자로서는 더욱 그의 살아나심으로 말미암아 구원을 받을 것이니라”(롬 5:10). 할렐루야! 이 사랑이 당신을 통해 경건하지 못한 자들에게 복음을 가지고 다가가는 일로 나타나게 하십시오. 하나님이 그들에게 화가 나 있지 않다는 것을 그들이 알게 하십시오. 그들은 지금 모습 그대로 그분께 나아올 수 있으며 용납될 수 있습니다.
그분은 이사야서 1:18에서 말씀하셨습니다. “… 너희의 죄가 주홍 같을지라도 눈과 같이 희어질 것이요 진홍 같이 붉을지라도 양털 같이 희게 되리라.” 그분은 경건하지 않은 자들을 예수 이름 안에서 하나님의 영으로 깨끗하고, 거룩하고, 의롭게 하시는 분이십니다. 할렐루야!
기도
거룩하신 아버지, 나에게 화해의 직분을 맡겨 주시니 감사합니다. 경건하지 못한 자들을 섬기고 그들을 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 구원으로 인도하는 일에 당신의 동역자이자 파트너가 되는 특권을 주시니 감사합니다. 나는 오늘 전 세계에 복음이 전파될 때 많은 사람들의 심령 안에 있는 믿음이 휘저어져서 그들이 복음을 받아들이고 회심하기를 기도합니다. 예수 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.

HE DIED FOR THE UNGODLY
And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled (Colossians 1:21).
The scripture above describes the ungodly as alienated from God, and enemies in their minds by wicked works. In other words, they were enemies of God in their minds because of their wicked works. Evidently, it wasn’t God who declared them enemies; rather, He’s the One reconciling them. The Bible says, “To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them…” (2 Corinthians 5:19).
This is similar to what transpired between God and Adam in the Garden. Adam sinned against God and ran into hiding (Genesis 3:8). But God came looking for him; He said, “Adam, where are you?” How gracious He is! While we were sinners, in God’s mind, we weren’t enemies; He was working out how to bring us to Himself; He was working on a plan.
Colossians 1:22 tells us that the purpose and summation of Christ’s redemptive work was “…to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight.” He knew what He was going to do before He did it. Romans 5:6 says, “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” This is so touching.
He didn’t wait for us to become godly before He died for us. He initiated the reconciliation: “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life” (Romans 5:10). Hallelujah! Let this love be expressed through you to the ungodly in reaching out to them with the Gospel. Let them know God isn’t mad at them; they can come to Him just as they are and be accepted.
He said in Isaiah 1:18, “…though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” He’s the One that washes, sanctifies and justifies the ungodly in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Hallelujah!
PRAYER
Holy Father, thank you for committing to me the ministry of reconciliation; I’m grateful for the privilege of being your co-labourer and partner in ministering to the ungodly and bringing them salvation in Christ Jesus. As the Gospel is preached around the world today, I pray that faith is stirred in the hearts of many to receive the message and be converted, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
