Reverent Use Of His Name
“너희는 주 너희 하나님의 이름을 함부로 부르지 못한다. 주는 자기의 이름을 함부로 부르는 자를 죄 없다고 하지 않는다.”(출 20:7, 새번역)
구약에서 유대인들은 주님의 이름을 함부로 부르지 말라는 지시를 받았습니다. 예를 들어, 출애굽기 20:7은 “너는 네 하나님 여호와의 이름을 망령되이 일컫지 말라 여호와는 그의 이름을 망령되이 일컫는 자를 죄 없다 하지 아니하리라”고 말합니다. 유대인들은 하나님의 이름의 위대함을 이해하고 그 이름을 발음하는 것을 피했습니다. 대신 그들은 “아도나이”라는 말로 대체했습니다.
성경을 필사하던 서기관들은 하나님의 이름을 마주칠 때마다 잠시 멈추고, 가서 몸을 씻고, 그다음에 이름을 썼습니다. 이름이 여러 번 나올 경우, 그들은 매번 같은 과정을 반복했습니다. 이 정도 수준의 경외심은 하나님의 위대함과 위엄, 그리고 조상들 가운데서 행하신 경이로운 일들에 대한 인식에서 비롯되었습니다.
오늘날 많은 그리스도인들이 얼마나 가볍게 그분의 이름을 사용하는지 생각해 보십시오. 사람들은 그분의 이름의 능력이나 중요성을 이해하지 못한 채 케이크를 자르면서 그분의 이름을 외치거나 일상적인 대화에서 감탄사로 사용합니다. 예수님의 이름에 대한 이러한 가벼운 태도는 더 심각한 문제를 드러냅니다. 바로 예수님이 진정 누구이신지에 대한 지식이 부족하다는 것입니다.
예수님은 우물가에서 사마리아 여인을 만나셨을 때 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희는 알지 못하는 것을 예배하고 우리는 아는 것을 예배하노니 이는 구원이 유대인에게서 남이라”(요 4:22). 우상숭배의 역사를 가진 혼혈 민족인 사마리아인들은 예배와 경외함에 대한 올바른 이해가 부족했습니다.
안타깝게도 이러한 이해 부족은 오늘날에도 계속되고 있습니다. 당신은 예수님의 주되심의 실재를 이해하고 그 안에서 살아야 합니다. 그분은 단지 위대하신 분이 아니라 위대함 그 자체이십니다. 그분을 경배할 때 이러한 이해를 가지고 경배하십시오. 그분을 바르게 부르십시오.
예수님이 부활하신 후, 그분을 단순히 “예수님”이라고 부른 사람은 아무도 없습니다. 그분은 주님, 주 예수님으로 불리셨습니다. 예수님의 부활은 그분을 최고의 권세의 자리로 높이셨기 때문입니다. 우리가 주님에 대해 말할 때는 “예수님”이라고 말할 수 있지만, 그분을 부를 때는 반드시 그분을 주님으로 존경해야 합니다. “… 하나님은 복되시고 유일하신 주권자이시며 만왕의 왕이시며 만주의 주시오 오직 그에게만 죽지 아니함이 있고 가까이 가지 못할 빛에 거하시고 어떤 사람도 보지 못하였고 또 볼 수 없는 이시니 그에게 존귀와 영원한 권능을 돌릴지어다 아멘”(딤전 6:15-16)

사랑하는 주 예수님, 나는 주님의 거룩한 이름을 존경하고 경배합니다. 주님은 논쟁의 여지가 없는 통치자이시며, 만왕의 왕이시며, 만주의 주이시며, 홀로 불멸을 가지시고 가까이 갈 수 없는 빛에 거하시는 분이시기 때문입니다. 주님을 알고 말씀의 빛 가운데 행할 수 있는 특권에 감사드립니다. 주님의 이름은 모든 것 위에 높여졌으며, 나는 주님을 만물의 주님으로 인정합니다. 아멘.

REVERENT USE OF HIS NAME
“No using the name of GOD, your God, in curses or silly banter; GOD won’t put up with the irreverant use of his name” (Exodus 20:7 MSG).
In the Old Testament, the Jews were instructed not to take the name of the Lord in vain. For example, Exodus 20:7 says, “The LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” The Jews understood the greatness of God’s name to such an extent that they avoided pronouncing it altogether. Instead, they substituted it with “Adonai.”
When scribes copying the Scriptures encountered the name, they would pause, go wash themselves, and then proceed to write it. If the name appeared multiple times, they would repeat the process for each instance. This level of reverence came from an awareness of God’s greatness and majesty and the awe-inspiring deeds He wrought amongst their forefathers.
Contrast this with how casually many Christians use His name today. People shout His name while cutting a cake or use it as an exclamation in everyday speech, without understanding its power or significance. This casual attitude toward the name of Jesus reveals a deeper issue: a lack of knowledge of who He truly is.
When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well, He said, “Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews” (John 4:22). The Samaritans, being a mixed race with a history of idolatry, lacked a proper understanding of worship and reverence.
Sadly, this lack of understanding persists today. You must understand and live in the reality of the Lordship of Jesus. He’s not just great; He is greatness. Have this understanding when you worship Him. Address Him correctly.
After His resurrection, no one ever directly addressed Him simply as “Jesus.” He was addressed as Lord; Lord Jesus, because His resurrection exalted Him to the place of supreme authority. When speaking about Him, we may say “Jesus,” but when addressing Him, we must honour Him as Lord: “…who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen” (1 Timothy 6:15-16).
PRAYER
Dear Lord Jesus, I honour and reverence your holy Name, for you’re the Undisputed Ruler, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, who alone has immortality and lives in unapproachable light. Thank you, Lord, for the privilege to know you and walk in the light of your Word. Your Name is exalted above all, and I recognize you as Lord of all. Amen.
