하나님에 관한 “에피그노시스”의 증가
Increasing In The “Epignosis” Of Him
“이로써 우리도 듣던 날부터 너희를 위하여 기도하기를 그치지 아니하고 구하노니 너희로 하여금 모든 신령한 지혜와 총명에 하나님의 뜻을 아는 것으로 채우게 하시고 주께 합당하게 행하여 범사에 기쁘시게 하고 모든 선한 일에 열매를 맺게 하시며 하나님을 아는 것에 자라게 하시고”(골 1:9-10)
방금 우리가 읽은 구절은 사도 바울을 통한 교회를 향한 성령님의 기도입니다. 하나님께서는 당신이 하나님을 아는 것에 자라남과 동시에 모든 선한 일에 열매 맺기를 바라십니다. 이것은 정말 중요한 내용입니다! 여기서 흥미로운 바울의 단어 선택은 그가 지식을 설명하기 위해 “에피그노시스”(그리스어)를 사용했다는 것입니다.
이 단어는 성경 시대의 일상 대화에서는 자주 사용되지 않았습니다. 흥미롭게도 베드로가 그의 두 번째 서신에서만 이 단어를 사용했으며 바울의 메시지에 영향을 받은 것으로 짐작할 수 있습니다. “에피그노시스”는 정확하고 옳은 지식을 의미합니다. “에피그노시스”의 능력은 알고 있는 바를 삶과 연결 짓는 능력입니다. “에피그노시스”는 친밀함을 동반한 지식입니다.
바울은 유대인들이 일반적으로 잘 알지 못했던 이 지식을 소개했습니다. 그들은 율법을 암기하는 것에 초점을 맞추었습니다. 율법을 읽고, 소화하고, 반복하는 것이었습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그 이상을 원하셨습니다. 하나님께서는 그들이 그분에 대해 단순히 머리로만 아는 것이 아니라, 그분에 대한 “에피그노시스”를 갖기 원하셨습니다.
하나님께서 이렇게 말씀하신 것은 당연합니다. “… 이 백성이 입으로는 나를 가까이 하며 입술로는 나를 공경하나 그들의 마음은 내게서 멀리 떠났나니…”(사 29:13) 주 예수님께서는 마태복음 15:8에서 같은 말씀을 반복하셨습니다. “이 백성이 입술로는 나를 공경하되 마음은 내게서 멀도다”
구약의 백성들은 율법의 모든 세부 사항이나 내용을 암송할 수 있음에도 불구하고 실제적인 관계성이 없었습니다. 따라서 바울은 더 높은 수준의 지식, 즉 알고 있는 바와의 연결성을 포함하고 있는 지식을 소개했습니다.
“에피그노시스”는 단순한 관찰을 뛰어넘습니다. 이는 심오한 영적 연결을 포함합니다. 따라서 당신이 성경을 접할 때 그것은 단순히 일상적인 학습이 아닌 주님과 그분의 신성한 진리와의 관계 및 상호 작용을 발전시키는 것입니다. 할렐루야!
고백
나는 모든 지혜와 영적인 총명 안에서 하나님의 뜻에 대한 정확하고 정밀한 지식으로 충만합니다. 그분에 대한 나의 “에피그노시스”가 증가하고 내가 그 능력을 경험할수록 나는 그분께 합당하게 행하고, 모든 면에서 그분을 기쁘시게 하고, 모든 선한 일에서 열매 맺습니다. 예수 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.

INCREASING IN THE “EPIGNOSIS” OF HIM
“For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:9-10).
What we just read is the Spirit’s prayer for the Church through the Apostle Paul. God wants you to be fruitful in every good work while simultaneously increasing in the knowledge of God. How important this is! What’s intriguing about Paul’s choice of words here is his use of “Epignosis” (Greek) for knowledge.
That term wasn’t commonly used in everyday conversations in Bible days. Interestingly, it was also used by Peter only in his second epistle, possibly influenced by Paul’s message. “Epignosis” refers to precise, correct knowledge. The power of “Epignosis” lies in its ability to relate with that which is known; it’s knowledge with intimacy.
Paul introduced this kind of knowledge which the Jews generally weren’t acquainted with; they focused on memorising the Law; reading, internalizing and repeating it. But God wanted more; He didn’t want them to have just mere head knowledge of Him, but the “epignosis” of Him.
No wonder He said, “…this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me…” (Isaiah 29:13). The Lord Jesus reiterated the same words in Matthew 15:8, “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”
For them in the Old Testament, there was no real relationship even though they could recite every detail or aspect of the law. Therefore, Paul introduced this higher form of knowledge; a knowledge that includes fellowship with that which is known.
“Epignosis” surpasses mere observation; it involves a profound spiritual connection. So, when you engage with the Scriptures, it’s not merely about routine learning; it’s about deepening your relationship and interaction with the Lord and His divine truths. Hallelujah!
CONFESSION
I’m filled with the precise and exact knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. I walk worthy of Him, pleasing Him in every way, being fruitful in every good work even as my “epignosis” of Him increases, and I experience the power thereof, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
