Baptized “Into” His Name
“그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족들을 가르치고 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 그들에게 침례를 주며”(마 28:19 한글킹제임스)
신약에 나오는 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름은 곧 예수입니다. 사도들은 이 사실을 이해했고 예수 이름으로 침례를 베풀었습니다. 사도행전 19장에서 누가는 바울이 에베소에서 열두 제자를 만난 일을 기록하고 있습니다. 이들은 아볼로와 같이 침례 요한의 회개의 가르침을 열렬히 따랐지만 예수님의 침례에 대해선 잘 알지 못했습니다.
바울이 그들과 대화한 후, 성경은 다음과 같이 말합니다. “…그들이 이 말을 듣고 주 예수님의 이름으로 침례를 받으니라.”(행 19:3-5 한글킹제임스). 이 말씀은 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름이 곧 예수라는 것을 분명히 증거합니다. 하지만 바울이 에베소에서 이 열두 제자를 만난 사건에서 바로 알아차리긴 어려우나 중요한 의미를 담은 내용이 더 있습니다. 바로 바울이 그들에게 이렇게 물은 것입니다. “너희가 무슨 침례를 받았느냐(unto what)?”
“Unto”라는 단어에 주목하십시오. 이 단어는 그리스어로 “안으로-이동의 의미(into)”라는 단어와 동일합니다. 그러므로 침례를 받을 때 당신은 무엇 “안으로” 침례를 받은 것입니다. 본질적으로 바울은 그들에게 “너희가 누구 안으로 침례를 받았느냐?”고 물은 것입니다. 이것은 침례가 물에 잠기는 의식 이상의 깊은 의미가 있음을 암시합니다.

당신이 어떤 사역자에게 주 예수 이름으로 침례를 받는다는 것도 중요하지만, 가장 중요한 사실은 당신이 실제로 주 예수 이름 안으로 들어가는 침례 받았다는 것입니다. 따라서 물침례가 그리스도와 당신의 연합의 표현으로서 더 합법적입니다(롬 6:3-4). 하나님을 송축합니다!

아버지, 우리에게 예수님의 이름을 주셔서 감사합니다. 나는 그분의 이름 안에서, 그분의 이름을 의지하며 살아갑니다. 나는 그리스도 안으로 침례를 받았고, 그분과 뗄 수 없는 하나가 되었습니다. 내가 그분 안에서 살고 움직이며 존재하기 때문입니다! 나는 예수님의 이름 안에 살고 있고, 그분의 이름에 의지해 살아가며, 그분의 이름의 영광의 권능으로 나의 세상을 다스리고 지배합니다! 하나님께 영광 드립니다!

Baptized “Into” His Name
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost”(Matthew 28:19).
The name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost in the New Testament is Jesus. The apostles understood this and baptized people in the Name of Jesus. In Acts 19, Luke recounts Paul’s encounter with the twelve men in Ephesus who, like Apollos, were zealous followers of John the Baptist’s teaching of repentance but weren’t conversant with the baptism of Jesus.
After Paul’s dialogue with them, the Bible says “…they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 19:3-5). It further makes it evident that the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost is Jesus. But something else that isn’t immediately obvious in Paul’s encounter with those twelve disciples in Ephesus is when he asked them: “Unto what then were ye baptized?”
Notice the word, “unto”; is from same Greek word as “into.” So, when you’re baptized, you’re baptized “into” something. In essence, Paul was asking those men, “Into what then were you baptized?” This suggests something deeper than just being immersed in water for baptism.
The connotation of that verse is better deciphered in some newer translations, such as the NIV. It says, “On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.” When you’re baptized in water, you’re baptized into Jesus Christ, not just in the name; that’s the significance of it.
Apart from the minister who’s baptizing you doing it in the Name of the Lord Jesus, which is one part of it, the most significant part of it is that you’re actually baptized into the Name of the Lord Jesus. Water baptism therefore seals the legal aspect of your union with Christ (Romans 6:3-4). Blessed be God!

Thank you, Father, for giving us the Name of Jesus to live in, and live by. I’m baptised into Christ, and I’ve become inseparably one with Him; for in Him I live, move and have my being! I live in, and by, the Name of Jesus, and I rule and dominate my world by the power of that Name. Glory to God!
